Removing Moles – What to Expect

January 14th, 2008

If you have moles on your skin, and this is a common problem, you may at some time come to a point where you are considering removing moles. There is more than one way to do this, and consulting with your doctor is the best way to figure out which direction that you want to go. Before you go to your doctor, however, you might want to do some of your own research so that you will have some knowledge about treatments. When you are aware of all of the options when it comes to removing moles, you can have a more detailed discussion with your doctor, and make a more informed decision. Even if you have a lot of faith in your physician, there are so many new things happening in medicine every day that he actually may not know about the latest procedures.

You can choose the method of surgically removing moles. This is usually performed by a dermatologist, and is most often done on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic. The surgeon will numb the area around the mole and then cut it away with a scalpel. This is called “excising” the mole. The mole is removed along with some of the skin around it and below it. There is always more to a mole than what we see on the surface, and the surgeon will want to be very thorough when removing moles so that he gets all of it. With this method of mole removal, a few stitches are usually needed afterward.

A variation of this method is the one where only the surface of the mole is removed. This is often used for removing moles that absolutely pose no threat of becoming cancerous. The surface is removed and then the area is cauterized and bandaged. Healing time is short and results are usually satisfactory.

Another method used by doctors for removing moles is the laser method. This is usually used by cosmetic surgeons more than by dermatologists, although the method is not exclusive to them. This method mostly just changes the color of the mole so that it matches the rest of the skin, and is not suggested for use with larger moles, moles that are very raised, and moles that could potentially become cancerous. For smaller, flatter moles, however, the laser method can be an easy, non-invasive way of taking care of the problem, and healing time is very fast.
