Understanding The Problem Of Scalp Acne

July 17th, 2008

Many people are under the impression that acne is a problem that only affects the skin of the face, but in fact acne outbreaks can and do occur in many other places as well. One of the most troubling forms of acne is scalp acne, and this condition can be painful, troubling and embarrassing to those who suffer.

The scalp is after all skin, and the sad fact is that acne can affect any place on the body where there is skin. These acne outbreaks on the skin of the scalp can be quite annoying and troubling, but the good news is that this unique form of acne can be treated in much the same way as the acne that appears on the face.

To treat scalp acne effectively it is important to use a skin cleanser which contains salicylic acid. Soak a cotton ball in that skin cleaner and apply it to the area where the acne outbreak has occurred. Most of these acne medications are very drying, and they will dry the hair out completely as they come into contact with it. For that reason it is important to rinse the cleanser away thoroughly after it has been applied.

Another option for those with scalp acne is to use a shampoo designed for those with oily scalp conditions, and then follow up that shampooing with a target treatment using either an astringent or an acne product which contains salicylic acid. This product can be applied directly to the affected area using a pad or a cotton ball.

When treating acne outbreaks on the scalp it is important to avoid using products that contain benzoyl peroxide or other types of peroxide, since these products could change the color of the hair or damage the hair. This is especially important for those acne sufferers who color their hair, use a product to cover up grey or have applied a permanent. This type of chemically treated hair is weaker and more porous than untreated hair, and the peroxide products could damage it further.
