Spironolactone started life as a medication for high blood pressure, and it has established a long history of safety and effectiveness for that purpose. There are a number of possible side effects to watch out for when taking spironolactone, including increased urination and increases in potassium levels. Symptoms of increased potassium levels can include irregular heartbeat, leg cramps, excess thirst, mouth dryness, drowsiness, weakness and headache. In addition, due to its estrogenic effects spironolactone acne treatment can increase fertility, providing another reason for effective birth control when taking the drug.
