Using doxycycline for acne treatment

March 12th, 2009

Many acne sufferers have been using doxycycline for acne treatment for many years, and this medication can be a remarkably effective treatment for severe cases of acne. Doxycycline is a relative of tetracycline and other antibiotics often used to treat acne, and some studies have actually suggested that both doxycycline and minocycline can in fact be more effective at treating acne outbreaks than the more commonly prescribed tetracycline.

No matter with the variety, all antibiotics used to treat acne work the same way – by interrupting the growth of bacteria in the skin which can lead to acne outbreaks and infections.

Those interested in taking doxycycline for acne treatment should be aware that there are a number of factors that can affect the absorption of this and other antibiotics, including some vitamin and mineral supplements, most notably iron, calcium and iron. Even taking simple antacids can interfere with the proper absorption of doxycycline, so it is important to keep your doctor advised of all medications you are taking, both prescription medications and over the counter preparations as well.

It is also important to be aware of possible drug interactions when taking doxycycline for acne treatment. In particular, oral contraceptives, warfare and penicillin should not be taken with doxycycline. It is particularly important for those on the pill to be aware of these effects, since doxycycline can reduce the contraceptive effects of the pill.

While side effects from taking doxycycline are not common, it is important to be on the lookout for such side effects as itching and rash, sunburn, flaking skin and swelling of the face, tongue and lips. In addition, excessive bruising, less frequent urination and severe diarrhea have been known to occur when taking doxycycline as well.

Some of the less serious symptoms that have been known to occur with those taking doxycycline and other antibiotics include allergic reactions, hives, and itching. As with any type of acne treatment, it is important to consult your doctor or health care professional before starting treatment, and to keep him or her apprised of any side effects and discomfort you may experience. Doxycycline and other prescription antibiotic treatments can be quite effective at treating severe acne, but it is important to be aware of the possible side effects and act accordingly. If serious side effects occur, the doxycycline treatment should be discontinued immediately, and your doctor should be consulted right away.
