Skin Rashes – Types and Treatment

January 10th, 2010

An inflamed or irritated patch of skin, a body rash is generally considered a minor medical problem that can be treated and eliminated with simple home remedies. However, in some cases, a persistent rash may be a symptom of an illness or chronic condition that requires professional medical attention. It’s important to consult a physician when rashes are accompanied by extreme soreness, swelling, fever, joint pain, streaks of redness, or tightness in the throat as these might be signs of a more serious illness.

There are anti-itch lotions as well as antihistamines that can be given to reduce the itching sensation. This won’t get to the root of the problem but is still useful as temporary relief. Scratching can cause bacterial infections and other problems for the skin area. Be sure the skin lotion you use for moisturization is for sensitive skin as you don’t want to use a product that can promote an eczema rash due to an allergic reaction.

Skin rash could occur as a result of a variety of reasons. Consequently, its treatment too varies widely depending on its causes. Diagnosis must take into account such things as the appearance of the rash, other symptoms, what the patient may have been exposed to, occupation, and occurrence in family members. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to decide what category the rash falls into.

Common Types of Rashes: The most common rashes are Atopic dermatitis which is a type of eczema rash. This type of rash usually starts out in childhood. The symptoms of Atopic dermatitis are scaly skin and dry patches on the legs, arms, and chest.

A second very common rash is contact dermatitis. Basically your skin comes in contact with something that irritates it or to which you have an allergy. Poison ivy rash is one example .Two other rashes that are scaly in character are pityriasis rosea and psoriasis. The latter is genetically linked and manifests predominantly on the body as a leg rash near the knees and elbow rash.

Rash is a change in the skin which affects its appearance and or texture. Most often a rash is localised to one part of the body, but other times it can have an affect on the entire body. Rashes can cause the skin to change color, become bumpy, dry, itchy, swell among other things that can result in alot of pain. Because of the wide array of rash symptoms treatments also vary widely.

Remember that the best thing is to prevent these rashes from ever occurring in the first place. Although water chemistry and proper use of sanitizers is important, regular cleaning and maintenance is equally important. Regular cleaning means something as simple as wiping down all of the spa’s surfaces with your hand or a cloth every time you go in. I know that sounds crazy (drives my wife a little nuts actually – but no skin rashes in over 20 years of spa ownership). Wiping down aids in cleaning and circulation.

Switching skin care products (different brands) too often in a short period of time say within one or two months, can also cause irritation, sometimes rashes to your face. Just before your skin could adjust to the current brand, you have decided to try new ones. Eventually your skin could not take it and begin to show signs of rashes.
