March 2nd, 2010

Having outdoor activities with family and friends can be exhilarating. But staying outdoors for long periods of time can expose one’s self to many skin risks—even cancer.

With this in mind, staying outdoors then isn’t as fun anymore. The thinning ozone layer has caused detrimental effects to inhabitant on earth—especially humans.

In a skin report, it was said that “when you’re skin is exposed to the sun, cells are damaged. These damaged cells give off free radicals, unstable molecules that cause cell damage.”

Such circumstances may give you second thoughts in going out and exposing yourself to the sun. But there are fail-safe allies that can protect you from the risks of sun exposure.

How does fish oil help the skin?

Well, pills made out of fish oils have a high amount of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, and these are beneficial in helping cells prevent damage and facilitate repair.

The fatty acids in fish oils are beneficial in helping cell repair and can actually prevent skin damage. Research even found that by taking daily fish oil supplements, it helps “reduce the risk of skin cancer, helps the body resist sunburn, and help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and ease dry skin.”

Although sunscreens can help protect the skin in the midst of sun exposure, such protection is only skin-deep. However, “ fish oil supplements offer enough protection for those quick trips to the mailbox or to a neighbor’s house.”

There were two studies performed to determine the extent of protection that fish oils can provide from sun damage.

Results of the studies showed that 33% of respondents were able to stay in the sun without feeling any burns. Moreover, there were others “who show severe symptoms (heat, rash, sunstroke, getting a sun burn, etc.) when in the sun for an extended period found they could comfortably stay in the sun for twice as long as usual. This was following six months of regularly taking fish oil supplements.

Other benefits derived from regular intake of fish oil pills or fish consumption include lessening, if not eliminating dry skin rashes, cracked skin on both hands and feet, psoriasis, eczema, dandruff, allergy rashes, acne, and skin lesions.

With all these remedies, it is guaranteed that fish oils are the skin’s best friend.
